Question and Answer

Question:

I'm planning to head up to Simcoe next weekend for late fall smallmouth for the first time. I'm wondering if you could share any thoughts on a good location to try for a first timer (general boat launch locations). I'm not looking for any secret spots, unless you're feeling overly generous! I'm planning to use drop shot and jigging spoons. Any advice on what's been working well lately would be great as well.

Thanks again for the advice you gave me last fall on perch. Dad and I had a great day!

Thanks.
Troy

Answer:

Hey Troy,

I would base my launch location on the wind speed and direction.  Make sure to check on line for latest wind speeds. If there are north winds (which predominate this time of year) than Barrie would be hard to beat.  You can launch at Tiffin launch – or at this time of year even at the City of Barrie Launch.  Good fishing is not far from there and you’ll see the boats. Drop shot, spoons and tubes are working well. The Trigger X minnow baits or their small 4 inch flutter worm in shad color are working well for drop shot.  Critical part is to maintain contact with bottom – or you won’t get bit.

Hope this helps Troy and that you have a good time with your dad.
