Question and Answer

Question:

I do know Cooks Bay is the good spot for pike fishing, but I wanna try pike fishing at Southeast are of this lake. I caught pike in Pefferlaw river.
Where are good pike spots in main lake sping and summer?

Wei

Answer:

Hello Wei,

Hope all is going well!

Yes for sure Cooks Bay has a reputation as holding more pike per acre than any other area of Lake Simcoe.  Habitat there is tailor made for northerns – with incredible weed growth, plenty of deep water adjacent to that weedgrowth and some exceptional spawning and nursery habitat at the very south end. The forage base – various minnow species and plenty of yellow perch, is also exceptional throughout the entire Bay.

So, although Cook Bay is the first choice for many Simcoe pike enthusiasts - they can be caught elsewhere on the lake.  Basically, what I try and do is look for weedgrowth. On the southeast side of the lake I would check that south shore of Georgina Island thoroughly.  Work any weed patches you can find – especially if there’s a little deep water break there.   You may not find the classic breaks you do in Cook Bay – nor the numbers ... but mini versions of what you see in the bay can hold some good pike.

The same deal goes for another spot you can try ... the shoreline running south of Duclos Point and then that whole bay south towards Morning Glory swamp and Lambs Hide-Away Trailer Park.  Just look for those aquatic plants pike love – especially if you can find a mixture of different types like coontail and cabbage. Finally ... the Pefferlaw River itself  cannot be ignored either.   Pike do travel there to spawn in the spring ... and although by now (mid June) that spawn is long over, some will remain in the river ... so look for those deep weed breaks ... and hold on – cause you might just get bit by one of those toothy critters you’re after.

Hope that helps Wei – and that you have a great season on the lake.
