Question and Answer

Question:

Hi Wil,

I tried sending you a email on your site but couldn’t get that security words at the bottom to work so I hope this does. I was out fishing on Simcoe between Snake Island seen alot of bass but they wouldn’t hit! I was using tubes. What colours are good and what size head do you use? I will say my son had a blast with the big rockies.

Thanks and will be talking to you. Looking forward to you seminars this year.

Take care

John

Answer:

Hi John ... good to hear from you.  The extremely clear water in Simcoe has made these shallow water smallies extremely spooky.   Once they see you or the boat, they may feign interest in everything you throw at them and become almost impossible to catch. I don’t think color is as important as staying well back from these fish and making extremely long casts with whatever bait you’re using.  Tubes are definitely good- I like most green hues – pumpkinseed as well as smoke and other natural colors. For shallow water I use 1/8 oz but typically, when bass are over 10’ I stick with a heavier ¼ ounce head on a super sharp Gamakatsu hook.  You can also do well with drop shot John- even in the shallow water- just shorten your lead.  If there’s some wind- a jerkbait like a Rapala X Rap  rocks!  Key though is to stay well back of those fish and make longggggggggggggggg casts!

Hope this helps,

Wil
