Question and Answer
Question:
Hi Wil,
I'm looking for a place to toss out a bobber from shore and hopefully catch a few perch/crappie (or anything really), somewhere not too far from Barrie. I'm new to the area and haven't put a hook in the water in Ontario yet. Would you have a couple suggestions for me to try out?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Tim
Answer:
Hi Tim,
Thanks for your question about shore fishing opportunities near Barrie. First off, please check out a similar Q and A I had awhile back – within the Lake Simcoe section of Ask Wil. That should give some good background info for you. Additionally, in the summer issue of Lake Simcoe Living Magazine (available at no charge around the lake at various tackle shops and other businesses) I will have an entire article on shore fishing Lake Simcoe and her tributaries.
Until then though- you may want to take a short drive north to Orillia this weekend to participate in the Orillia Perch Festival. There have been some nice perch caught from shore in and around the Atherly Narrows. This will last for a few more short weeks. The Port of Orillia is one place you can try as well right on Lake Couchiching. In the Narrows, the old rail swing bridge and bays on either side hold perch in the spring and the south east side under the bridge is still accessible. You can also head over to Gill St. and fish the canal or shoreline around the bridge. If you stop in at Tremblay’s Tackle Box (take 400 north to Hwy 12 exit and travel about 5km east – the store will be there on your right) you can pick up bait and the latest hot perch tackle- as well as get a few more good shore fishing opportunities from the knowledgeable staff.
So, back to your new home of Barrie for a moment Tim. There are several great shore fishing areas in and around City limits. The entire shoreline break wall that begins at the Tiffin St launch can be good. The Rack n’ Reel Tackle Shop on Simcoe St. in Barrie has a great supply and assortment of tackle and Penny - the owner may just have a few more places for you to try locally.
Hope this helps Tim and good luck tossing that bobber out from shore this season!

I know how intimidating Simcoe can be ... but being right in Barrie ... you just have to give your own Kempenfelt Bay a try for yellow perch with your kids. Just plan your day according to weather – and especially wind. If you have anything more than 15kmph coming from the south, it can tunnel right into the bay – and you likely will get more of that uncomfortable intimidating feeling. A slight north or northwest breeze on the other hand can be just what the doctor ordered and you can have a blast with the big perch there. Another opportunity is on the north side of Hwy 400 in Barrie at Little Lake. Launching isn’t the greatest at the Trailer Park there- but as long as your boat isn’t huge- you should be fine. It’s full of a variety of panfish and some decent largemouth bass. Many anglers are intimidated with the weeds there Roland, but if you’re a Kawartha Lakes angler- you are no doubt comfortable fishing around weeds. Another “Little lake” exists in the Town of Midland – again shallow and weedy but it too has some decent panfish for you and your kids to try...
Hope this helps and that you have a good fishing season with your kids.

Thank you very much.
